Abuela Goye
Abuela Goye has stores in San Carlos de Bariloche, San Martín de los Andes, Galerías Pacífico, Cariló, Florida, Río Gallegos.
Abuela Goye was born in a family of Swiss immigrants which carried such a surname. The first representatives came to the area around 1860 and founded what is now known as “Colonia Suiza” (Swiss Colony), 25 km away from San Carlos de Bariloche City, in the Argentine Patagonia.
This original enterprise by the Goye family was nourished by the influence of other families of different origins, such as Austrian, Italian, and others typical of the Argentine South. Thus, their knowledge of pastry cooking and chocolate making acquired the best nuances and special practices of each different culture. In this way, more than 30 years ago, Abuela Goye turned into a regional reference when talking of highest quality in chocolate, jams, liquors and ice-creams.

Temperatures at still a bit warm here in Buenos Aires. Can’t wait for the weather to cool off a bit and finally welcome the winter, which by the way, I much prefer to summer in Buenos Aires. Photo taken on the Perito Moreno glacier.
** BA daily will return next week. It is a 4 day-week end starting 2nite for Easter celebrations. We are off to Cordoba and the Sierras, located in the center of the country, for the next couple of days. **

Feeling lonely
Calafate in Patagonia surprises for the first time visitor. Houses gather a bit everywhere and the city keeps expanding [tourism obliges], more houses and hotels are being built, but the infrastructure to get to those new construction is nonexistent and you often find yourself walking or driving in dusty dirt roads. Last time I was in Calafate I stayed at that hotel in the background of the picture, that lonely white building ahead of the bus. When night comes, and with the permanent strong wind that characterizes so well the city, a walk to the city center is not very fun. If you come to Calafate make sure your hotel is at walking distance from the main street.

A refreshing peek at the surroundings of Bariloche [foothills of the Andes, Patagonia], while we have a very rainy weather in Buenos Aires.

Facing the Perito Moreno
Last picture I’ll show from our trip to Calafate. More pictures are available at the photos galleries:

Perito Moreno from the footbridges – Photos gallery 3
We were facing the glacier standing from the footbridges, offering a spectacular sight of the Perito Moreno.

Onelli Lake
During the Todos Glaciers excursions, you go through the glaciers Spegazzini, Onelli and Upsala. Later you stop at the Onelli Bay, walking a few minutes through the woods to reach the Onelli Lake, fed by the icebergs from Onelli, Agazzis and Volado glaciers. It’s a beautiful and very relaxing landscape.

Perito Moreno
The Perito Moreno Glacier is a glacier located in the Los Glaciares National Park in the south west of Santa Cruz province, Argentina. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Argentine Patagonia.

Glaciers cruise
The best way to see the Upsala and Spegazzini Glaciers is to go on a cruise around the glaciers. You leave from Puerto Bandera and navigates on the Lago Argentino [Argentino Lake]. Then you embark on the brazo norte to reach brazo Upsala towards the Upsala glacier and later go down to the brazo Spegazzini to see the glacier of the same name.

Boarding zone
Calafate Airport – waiting to board our plane to go back to Buenos Aires. Those 4 days in Calafate were precious. This part of Patagonia is gorgeous! Perito Moreno glacier is a spectacular beauty of nature. Will definitely go back. I’ll be posting pictures over the week-end.

San Carlos de Bariloche
CIty of Bariloche – commonly called San Carlos de Bariloche. If you wonder where the city’s name comes from, then read the following:
“…the first white man to settle in what is today the urban center of Bariloche was Carlos Wiederhold. It is believed that Wiederhold received a letter wrongly addressed to “San Carlos” instead of Mr. Carlos or “Don Carlos”, this becoming the origin of the name of the town, that was officially christened on May 3, 1902, the date of its foundation. To the name San Carlos, Bariloche was added, being the Spanish distortion of the native name Vuriloche, a word from the “tehuelche” language meaning “different people, from the other side”. [from Enjoy Patagonia]

View from the lake
View of the hotel Llao Llao from the lake. It’s funny, but somehow when we took a look inside the hotel and around, it reminded me of the Overlook Hotel from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, because of its shape and structure. This may sound weird but this is how I felt it when I was there, especially since it’s only surrounded by greens and mountains, hehehe ;=)

By the lake
A bit of paradise in the Patagonian landscape. This charming house is located a few kilometers out of the city San Carlos de Bariloche.

Abuela Goye
In Argentina, among many other delicious things (ice creams are one of those), there are the chocolates! Speaking of chocolates, while in Bariloche, I was introduced to the Abuela Goye [abuela = grandmother in Spanish]. You can’t miss it, because there’s a life-size figure of the “grandmother” standing outside the store. Abuela Goye is another family brand of chocolate. They also serve excellent ice creams, yummi hot chocolates, and good tea, and tones of delicious cakes. A place to visit!

Isla Victoria
Picture taken on the Isla Victoria. The Isla Victoria, is an island in the province of Neuquen, located within the lake Nahuel Huapi. It has a total area of 31 km2, and is protected by the Nahuel Huapi National Park since 1934. To read more about the island, click here [in Spanish].

Gorgeous!
I’m back to the bustling city of Buenos Aires, and missing already the splendor and beauty of the Patagonia. Our trip was great, too short, but we brought back tones of pictures from that unforgettable region of Argentina. I will, of course, post some of them to my other weekly blog when time allows. For now, here’s a view of the so famous Llao Llao Hotel, located between the Lake Nahuel Huapi and the Lake Moreno.
