Maybe this is a question that I should not even ask: what’s your favorite drink among the 2 shown in this picture: Mate or Wine? Click here to see another posting about Mate and learn about it. Mate is not my thing. I don’t dislike it but gosh the taste’s weird ;=) So what’s your preference?

Since today is the last day of the Feria del Libro, I had to go back one more time over the week-end to do last minute book-shopping. This is the view inside La Rural on my way to enter the main pavilions.

This week we were invited to a despedida (farewell party) of an American couple leaving Argentina. He’s working for the U.S Embassy, the apartment we went to was gorgeous! This is the view from the balcony overlooking the zoo. Pretty! :=) I got to learn a bit about what it’s like working for an embassy: apartment is provided by the Embassy (no rent to pay), kids’ education is free of charge for the parents (taken care by the embassy), and salary’s in US$. Dream job? Not sure, moving every 2 years when they’re transfered to another country. Readjusting to the new country, new language, making new friends…. humm and the most worrisome is the country you’re sent to. If you happen to say no to the country you’re sent to, you’re pretty much resigning from the job. Working in an embassy, is that tempting for anyone? ;=)

Inside the 34th Book Fair taking place in La Rural. It’s the largest book festival in Latin America. It brings together publishers, writers, authors, booksellers, distributors, scientists, and teachers from around the world, and attracts well over a million readers to its pavilions. If you did not go yet, go this week-end, the fair’s last day is on Monday.

San Telmo buildings and a head. Not sure what the head is all about, being out of place, I find it kind of cool. If anyone happens to know more about the “head”, please drop a comment. Thanks!

They want to protect certain buildings in the downtown area. This is particularly true of the church El Salvador, located on Callao Avenue and the street Tucumán.

Esquel, a town in the northwest of the province of Chubut in Patagonia, has been affected by a rain of ashes caused by the Chaitén volcano’s eruption in Chile. From dawn till late in the day, towns around Esquel, have been covered by a dense cloud of ash hidding the sun most of the day. Following photos are from LaNacion.

Today’s contribution comes from Jorgelina who lives in the barrio Belgrano R. This neighborhood is right by where I live, but it’s nicer ;=) It’s very quiet, many tree-shaded streets, very pleasant place to live. Jorgelina contacted me not so long ago and proposed me to post her pictures, which I’m doing today. Thanks Jorgelina!

Waiting for the train at the station Belgrano C. It always amazes me the quantity of books, newspapers, magazines displayed at the news-stands. And this is true all over the city.

Earlier this week, I received an email from Pantelis, who gently asked me to post the picture of an orthodox church. He’s from Greece, and this week-end they’re celebrating the Orthodox Eastern. This is a re-post, since I first posted this picture in March 2006. It would have been better to show a Greek orthodox church but time did not allow me to. I did not know there was one in BA, but as Pantelis told me there’s one on Alvares and Cordoba. I’ll for sure go check it out soon. So for you Pantelis and all the Greek readers, here’s the picture of an orthodox church taken in San Telmo in front of Parque Lezama.

Quilmes beer is the archetypal beer in Argentina. As wikipedia puts it: it has become something of a national symbol, and has 75% of the beer market share in Argentina. It sponsors the Argentina national football team, and the colours of its labels are Argentina’s light blue and white. Personally I dont’ like it, and many Argentinians I know, feel the same about Quilmes. In any case, last time I went groceries shopping, I noticed this note saying something like: “We’re reminding you that every beer, no matter which brand it is, is sold for household consumption. Max. of 4 bottles per person.” That was the first time I’ve seen this note, never saw it anywhere else since then.
